abstract = "Urban environmental problems have worsened in recent decades due
to the growth of cities. In this way, between the various problems
related to this issue we highlight the urban climate, generated
from changes made in the coverage of urban surface, as a result of
land cover transformations, causing heat islands. In this
perspective, the present study aims to estimate the relationship
between the Land Surface Temperature (LST) and the Vegetation
Index (IV), through the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index
(NDVI), in order to evaluate the relationship between surface
temperature and the soil cover, and later, identify the heat
islands in Macei{\'o} city, capital of Alagoas state (Brazil). To
conduct the study was obtained images from orbit 214 and point 67
of the satellite Landsat- 5 TM on the date 11/03/2011. From the
images processing were generated thematic maps of LST and NDVI. In
General, the values of TS followed a trend, increasing from the
periphery to the central area of the city. In the results was
evidenced that the heat islands are concentrated in places with
minor IV and higher density of human occupation. In areas where
human occupation prevails at the expense of vegetation, the
temperatures are higher, ranging between 35°C and 38°C. In places
with higher concentrations of vegetated areas, mild temperatures
prevail, with values between 20°C and 29°C.",
